The RIMA Group is a world leader in the production of special, high-purity "green" alloys based on silicon and magnesium in Brazil, being the only primary magnesium producer in the Western and Southern Hemispheres. The products are manufactured from our own reserves of high purity dolomite and quartz, guaranteeing total control of the quality and origin of the raw materials . All of RIMA units are ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified in addition to having specific certifications for each activity, such as IATF 16949 (Die Casting), SA8000 / ISO 45001 (Mining) and FSC®-C121993 certified forests.

The RIMA Group was the first company in the world to obtain SGS certification for the calculation of CO₂ emission balances, following ISO 14067:2023, ISO 14040:2009, ISO 14044:2009 and the TFS Standard (Together for Sustainability), confirming its leadership in offsetting CO₂ emissions.

The RIMA group has been operating for more than 50 years. Beginning in 1952, Oswaldo Vicintin founded Metalur Ltda. In Sao Paulo. In 1974, his son, Ricardo Vicintin, moved operations to Minas Gerais where he founded Eletrometalur S/A. This later became known as Rima Industrial S/A in 1993.

Today, the RIMA Group is a company in constant evolution, with global operations and a strong commitment to the environment and the communities around it.

1974

The Beginning

Installation of the first industrial unit, Eletrometalur in Várzea da Palma, northern Minas Gerais.

1975

Bocaiúva plant

In 1975, RIMA Industrial built a primary magnesium plant in Bocaiuva, strengthening its position in the world market.

In August, Furnace 1 began producing 50% Ferro Silicon for nodularizing alloys

1978

Furnace 2

Furnace 2 was commissioned in August 1978, starting the production of 75% Ferro Silicon .

1979

Furnace 3

To expand the production of ferroalloys, Furnace 3 was later added to expand the production of 75% FeSi.

Inauguration of Brasmag in Bocaiuva, the only primary magnesium producer in the Southern Hemisphere

1980

Furnaces 4, 5 and 6

Furnaces 4, 5 and 6 start operating in Várzea da Palma producing Silicon Metal.

The furnaces were commissioned in 1980, 1984 and 1989 respectively.

1987

Expansion

In 1987, the RIMA Group was created with the merger of the Várzea da Palma (VZP) and Bocaiúva (BCV) plants, expanding and diversifying its operations to strengthen its presence in the world’s industrial market.

1996

Magnesium Powder

RIMA Industrial Bocaiuva invested in a unique plant in Latin America for the production of magnesium powder, with a magnesium grinding plant that serves various market segments worldwide.

1997

Desulphurization

With the magnesium powder plant, the RIMA Group offers complete services for the desulphurization of pig iron, supplying units for co-injection of desulphurizing mixtures.

RIMA's magnesium grinding plant enables the production of desulphurizing mixtures, which are of the essence for steel production.

2001

Magnesium injection molding machine

The RIMA Group installed the first injection molding machine to produce magnesium die-casting parts recycling magnesium scrap in-house and operating with liquid metal, integrating production from dolomite.

2002

Automotive industry

The RIMA Group strengthened its automotive leadership in Latin America by acquiring and transferring Volkswagen's foundry to Bocaiúva, promoting magnesium and renewable energy technologies.

MOTORAV, a part of the RIMA Group, is the only supplier of engine blocks machined and assembled from the AS41 alloy, serving the global market.

2006

Certifications

The RIMA Group obtained ISO 9001:2015 certification for its units in Várzea da Palma, Capitão Enéas and Olhos D'Água, reinforcing its commitment to quality.

The company preserves 15,870.65 hectares as an RPPN in Januária, MG, showing its focus on sustainability.

In the automotive sector, RIMA is moving forward with cutting-edge technology and the Engine Assembly Unit.

It is also a pioneer in the sale of carbon credits by the UN, reducing 35,000 tons of CO₂, per year.

2008

Bocaiúva

RIMA Group opened a new plant in Bocaiúva to melt and inject aluminum and magnesium parts, focusing on the automotive industry with high quality and advanced technology.

2010

Certifications

RIMA is OHSAS 18001:2007 certified for the ODG Unit and ISO 14001:2015 certified for the CAP Unit.

2014

IMA Awards 2014

The RIMA Group was awarded with the IMA 2014 Awards of Excellence in Munich, in recognition for its leadership in the production of Magnesium Metal with low emissions. During the same period, the company also obtains the ISO-TS certification (now IATF 16949) for its FSP Unit

2015

FSC certifications

RIMA obtained FSC certification for the BUR Unit and ISO 14001:2015 certification for the BCV Unit, strengthening its environmental and sustainable commitment.

2018

IATF certifications

The RIMA Group made the transition to IATF 16949 certification, replacing the old ISO-TS standard, and raising the quality standards of its Die Casting Unit in the automotive industry.

2020

SIII oven

The Capitão Enéas unit started the world's largest submerged electric arc furnace using charcoal, significantly expanding the group's global capacity.

In the same year, seven eucalyptus clones were registered by MAPA, reflecting advances in genetic improvement at RIMA and ensuring more resilient forests.

Integrated management system

The RIMA Group is developing a comprehensive program to improve the management systems of its production units, based on ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, SA 8000 and FSC®️. This effort aims to form an Integrated Management System that addresses environmental, safety and occupational health policies, as well as social responsibility.

The program began at the RIMA Group's Mining Division, located in Olhos D'Água, with the implementation of ISO 14001 Management. Since then, the unit has obtained SA 8000, ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certifications.

Other Group units, including those located in Capitão Enéas, Várzea da Palma and Bocaiúva, have also been certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards. The Bocaiúva plant also received the IATF 16949 certification for automotive production. The Forestry Division in Buritizeiro is certified under FSC®️.
